Google Play Music is shutting down

YouTube Music will replace Google Play Music and serve as Google’s only music subscription service.

Google Play Music users have already started transferring their playlists, purchased and uploaded content over to YTM. We have worked diligently to make this transition as smooth as possible for our users and for artists. – as mentioned in a Google statement – GPM has served millions of users and devoted music fans for almost a decade. We are fully confident that focusing on one music service will unlock great opportunities that will benefit the music ecosystem.

Google Play Music – the most important changes

  • Starting August 24, Google will close the Music store on Google Play and cancel any pre-orders that have not yet been fulfilled.
  • In September Google will begin shutting down the GPM service in its entirety
  • As of September 1, 2020, GPM content that has not been transferred to YouTube Music may no longer be available.
  • In October the Google Music app and website will cease to exist.
